Understanding Free Traffic

Is there really any such thing as a "free listing" or "free traffic" ?

It seems to make sense that if a web site owner asks for a link to their web site but does not reciprocate [add a link back] then they were expecting... free one-way traffic!

The Facts about Free

The purpose of being listed is to generate traffic

  • Regardless of the engine [Google/Yahoo], any listing without incoming links simply ranks poorly when searched.  It ends up at the bottom of the results.
  • Sites that offer a listing without a return link begs the question, "how does it expect to generate traffic" ?
  • The same applies to any web site that does not offer free listings or does not have a links page... how will it generate traffic?

A directory [like ours] employs reciprocal linking to boost it's ranking in search engine results to generate it's traffic.  Without return links, the directory would simply rank poorly and therefore be unable to generate any worthwhile traffic.

The benefits of reciprocal linking are well known.  Web site owners either have the choice of 'paying' to be ranked in search engines or they must employ reciprocal linking.

Web site owners who request a Directory Listing without intending to reciprocate, are simply looking for "free one-way traffic".  In time, they will discover their web marketing has failed because the sites that accepted them, did not generate any traffic.

What did they really expect from a 'free listing' ?
