The Good Friday Appeal is a fundraising activity that brings together people from all parts of the community in a very special way.

Held every year during Easter on Good Friday, the Good Friday Appeal includes a televised event that raises awareness and funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The telethon, hosted on Good Friday and screened by Channel 7, is a day long telethon that draws impressive crowds. The event features celebrities and entertainment, with viewers invited to phone in and donate money to a much needed cause.

The Good Friday Appeal raises money for The Royal Children's Hospital, in Melbourne, to ensure that all children with life threatening illnesses receive the best possible medical and clinical care.

The Good Friday Appeal is known for the fun and initiative of those who get involved to raise money for the day. Many supporters raise money by staging community events that include anything from billycart races to ferret and yabby races.

Many pubs and hotels also hold special events such as a gala ball or trivia night to raise money for the cause. Volunteers also give their time to shake collection tins both on the day and in days leading up to the event.

The Good Friday Appeal, ongoing after many decades, sees thousands of volunteers who give of their time, skills and creativity every year to make sure that events are successful and the rewards are great.

History:

The origins of the Good Friday Appeal began in 1931 when groups of journalists from the The Herald and Weekly Times Ltd organised a sporting carnival in aid of charity, the Children’s Hospital being a receiver of the funds.

In 1942, Sir Keith Murdoch as Managing Director and Editor of The Herald agreed that The Herald and radio station 3DB (now MIX101.1) should broadcast an all day Appeal on Good Friday.

In 1957, Seven Network joined the Appeal and began the first daylong telethon, which is now held at Melbourne’s Telstra Dome.

The three media organisations MIX101.1, Seven Melbourne and The Herald and Weekly Times Herald Sun have remained the major supporters of the Good Friday appeal and are important for its success.

The Herald Sun newspaper gives a lot of editorial space to promote the good Friday appeal and the work of the Royal Children’s Hospital each year.

The telethon is the opportunity for viewers to see the miracles performed at the Hospital, to phone through their donations, and for many to hear their contribution acknowledged publicly.

Parma Week:

Many Victorian hotels now join together for an exciting fundraising project, known as Parma Week.

$2 from every chicken parmagiana meal sold in participating pubs around Victoria in the week leading up to Good Friday is donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

In 2006, 75 hotels, all members of the ALH Group, took part and raised a whopping $42,000, adding to the already impressive contribution long held by Victorian hotels during the Good Friday Appeal’s history.
