The World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events, raising both money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Each year, taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave, as many as 100,000 people across the country will shave or colour their hair, raising money through sponsorship for the foundation.
The World’s Greatest Shave is a fun was for people to help a good cause, with many people taking part in groups with their co-workers, school friends, club members and families.
To raise money in this event people don’t even have to necessarily shave – many people choose to colour their hair, including eyebrows, moustaches and beards to add to the fun. Guys can even wax their legs or chest!
To have fun on this day and raise money through sponsorship, groups can choose a ‘coordinator’ who can contact the Leukaemia Foundation on behalf of the group.
The fundraiser is normally held in March, however people can participate any time they choose to help raise money by organising a shave event for their school, club, anything!
Funds raised by the World’s Greatest Shave go towards the care and cure of patients and families living with leukaemia, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.
The Leukaemia Foundations uses raised funds to offer support services such as transport, accommodation, education and support programs and practical assistance free of charge. They also fund cutting edge research into treatments and cures.
The Foundation also funds research grants, scholarships and fellowships to promote innovative research into the causes, diagnosis and treatment of these cancers and related disorders.
Interesting Facts:
In the last eight years, World's Greatest Shave has raised in excess of $55 million.
The Leukaemia Foundation holds the Guinness World Record for the most heads shaved over a 24-hour period, set between 12 pm on April 16 and 12 pm on April 17 1999.
