Grab your banjo and have fun with a Hillbilly Party. Here’s some advice and tips for holding a party that your guests will surely love.

Costume Suggestions

A hillbilly costume is easy using Overalls. Try to add a fear tears and dirty it up.

Don’t wear shoes for the night and smear makeup on your feet to look as though you’ve been barefoot for years.

Try a costume shop for tooth-blackening makeup and fake big, bushy beards.

Make a banjo out of cardboard or Styrofoam and strap it to your back.

Decorations

This party is best held in the backyard. Instead of tables try setting out planks of wood propped on boxes for a rustic feel.

Add to the rustic feel by leaving rakes, buckets and rope scattered about the yard. Hang a long rope across the line and drape it with socks and clothing.

You can scatter straw about the yard, making fake fences out of cardboard. Cheap hay or straw can often be bought at pet stores where it might be called “Chaff”. It will require some raking later on but the guests will have a ball!

Hire a beer keg for the night and add to its look by placing brass and rubber tubing around it to make it look like a still. Simply use any scraps of metal or hosing you have and make it look as complicated as possible.

Food Suggestions

Instead of glasses, serve drinks in empty jam jars for a country Hillbilly feel.

Have snacks such as pretzels and chips served in bags labelled “Chicken Feed.”

Ideal food for the day would be country themed food such as potato salad, fried chicken and potato hash browns.

Games & Activities

Have a music jamboree by providing everyday household items such as saucepans, bottles and spoons. You can also use party poppers and whistles to add to the fun noise.

If you have a piñata for the day, try having it set on a fake spit, rather than hanging from a tree.

If you’ve used hay to decorate the yard, make cleaning up fun by giving each guest a rake and hold a competition to see who can gather the biggest pile of hay within the time limit.

For inspiration try using the following films and themes:

The Beverly Hillbillies
Deliverance
Dad and Dave
On Our Selection
O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?

Readers Comments

This party was perfect for the backyard. We have an old shed there so we made it look like a little shack and set the food tables in there. My boyfriend did a good job of a fake still as well, so the mood was great and fun. Very down-home and country!
